A Little About Me
I bring to At Home the caterer's perspective -- a set of strategies which I think will help you improve your home entertaining significantly. I've catered more than 15,000 events and served more than 15 million guests. I care passionately about home entertaining. I published my first book, The Frog Commissary Cookbook, in 1985, and it sold over 150,000 copies. I spent much of the past five years working on this book and companion website.
Before I became a caterer, I grew up in Yonkers, NY. Then, I set off for Philadelphia to join the University of Pennsylvania’s Class of ‘68. I read The Death and Life of Great American Cities by Jane Jacobs, which was highly influential and inspired my later interest in building community through restaurants. I trained for the Peace Corps in Brazil, worked in the peace movement and taught learning disabled children. In 1971, as a busboy, I embarked on a long career immersed in food.
Over the years I planned and operated many restaurants, including Frog, which was named Philadelphia's Best Restaurant of the Past 25 Years. In the mid-'80s, I was named a member of the first 50 Who's Who of Cooking in America -- alphabetically nestled between Robert Mondavi and Paul Prudhomme. (Now that was something!) After a particularly good decade, I was voted Restaurateur of the Decade. I've owned and operated Frog Commissary Catering since 1976.
